The Lost City – Part 2: From Blackfriars to Aldgate
Join us for the second part of our exploration of London's lost cityscape, tracing the remains of the Roman and medieval walls that once defined the City of London. Along the way, we will discover the site of a Roman fort, the Roman amphitheatre, and the fascinating Temple of Mithras. This walk also explores London's literary heritage, passing the locations of two of William Shakespeare's former residences and the site of his indoor theatre. The City contains nine surviving church tower relics. Three have been converted into residences; one was seen on the first walk, and another will feature on this route. These towers are reminders of churches lost either to wartime destruction or to later urban redevelopment. Other highlights include the Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice in Postman's Park and the Guildhall, which has served as the home of the City of London Corporation for more than 800 years. We will also pass the East India Arms, a pub that has stood here since 1828, close to the former headquarters of the East India Company, now occupied by the site of Lloyd's of London. After passing the historic Aldgate Pump, we return to the East End finishing the walk at the Aldgate Tap. Please Note • Participation is entirely at your own risk. • We will wait no more than five minutes after the advertised start time before setting off. • Once the walk has begun, I will be unable to answer phone calls or messages.
