Proust
This weeks philosophy session takes place around one of the greatest and most ambitious novels ever written- Marcel Proust's In search of Lost Time. No Prior knowledge of Proust or the novel is needed. Using the themes of the book as a jumping off point, we will be exploring some of the deepest and most personal questions in philosophy. How well do we know ourselves, Can we ever know another person? What does memory tell us about who we are? Is genuine self knowledge even possible? or are we all living to a degree inside fictions of our own making. Come prepared to think, disagree and perhaps see your own life from a different angle! Led by Saf Note new venue. Royal Oak Pub Barlow Moor Road M21 0BQ. See map below. We meet upstairs (ask at the bar if in doubt). Please put your mobile aside for the duration! You are welcome to join in our discussion or just listen. If you want to Present a topic just have a chat with Peter next time. We need to pay for stuff, photocopying etc., so please make a donation of £3 if you are unwaged, £4 if you are waged. To pay for the room we ask you buy a drink (or put an extra £1 in the pot). If we 'make' any money we give it to charity, (see messages). Looking forwards to seeing you Tuesday for a prompt start at 7.30pm. Our rules Whenever we engage in an intellectual discussion, our goal ought to be to converge on the truth. We can all promote reason by changing the mores of intellectual discussion, so people treat their beliefs as hypotheses to be tested rather than slogans to be defended. Whilst you may disagree with some ideas, we are here to have a civilised debate. Support others to share the time. To summarise: listen and be kind to each other.
